Raglan Readers, Bromley

Who are you?

We are 6 married women, with children living in the Bromley area aged between 39-52.

How did you get started?

The idea was thought of by one of our members, Sally, who wanted to get a group of people together, to read and discuss books. We all knew at least a couple of members (our children went to the same primary school) and we were all passionate readers. The idea of getting together in a book club was very exciting and we haven't looked back since.

How long have you been going?

Since about 2004, although I can't remember the month.

Where and how often do you meet?

We take turns to host the club at each others houses on a monthly basis.

What sort of books do you read?

Predominately fiction. Sometimes we select books according to genre, Booker prizes etc or they can be books that we have always meant to read and never got round to or ones we have read and hold dear to our hearts. We also like to try out authors from all around the world and have read several translated novels as well.

Which books have provoked the best discussion?

The reader, The lovely bones, Brave new world, 1984 Fingersmith, Dissolution, The scarlet letter

What was your worst read?

Where did it go so right.
The book group
The sea

Anything else?

Our group has developed into a strong, supportive friendship. We use our own life experiences to discuss various issues which come up in the books we read and try to incorporate many other cultural activities (theatre, art etc) into the group to keep it fun and relevent. We are all planning to grow very old together and still be reading!
